Megan's Record Book

Megan took a rifle shooting class through the 4-H STEP program here in Canyon County. Part of this class includes keeping a record book. One section requires that they write a story about their experience. Following is the story Megan wrote, 100% independently, and in about 30 minutes! Clay and I were pleasantly surprised, keep in mind she is 9 years old and in 3rd grade.

my Time In 4-h Rifle Class
Hi my name is Megan Ward and this year I joined for the first time. At first I thought that we were going to shoot real rifles that kicked hard but instead we shot pellet guns. It was still just as fun. I wanted to learn how to load a rifle properly and I did. It took a while to learn how to know which way was the right way for a bullet to face but now I remember.
I like how every time we got to shoot and learn, not just shoot. I got way better at aiming and now when I go with my dad I hit the target. Practice actually makes perfect.
I learned how to clean your rifle properly also, first, you have to make sure your gun is unloaded. And you have to have the right supplies. Its a good thing I learned that even if you just bought a new gun and didn’t use it for 3 months it can still get dirty.
I want to shoot real rifles next year that have a kick. I really like to shoot guns that have kicks like shotguns, rifles, and pistols. I think that if the club charged $15 per person they would be able to make enough money to be able to shoot rifles. I sorda like guns that don’t have a hard kick but I like to toughen up.
One thing I want to learn next year is how to move and shoot at the same time. The way I think of it is we would line up in a line, then, every time we shot we would move in like a certain pattern that we would learn. It is a very high goal but I think that we could learn it if we practice hard enough.
Since I liked this I think I’ll start other 4-h clubs like this one. I’m thinking of doing archery, shotgun, and rifle again. This was really fun but it went by so fast it seems like we had just started and we were finished. I guess it was because we only had it on Wednesday.
I really hope that I can do this next year or if it’s year round do it again this year. I really enjoyed when we got to do a little experiment with the marshmallow guns using earplugs. Also, well I guess that I don’t have to say because I liked everything that we did. I think even if I did it this year next year will be just as fun.
I also wanted to learn how to aim good. And guess what? I now almost always when we go shooting get a bulls eye. I loved how we wouldn’t try to just get a bulls eye we would try to get them all a group. I like that because if you try to get a bulls eye then we have bullets going everywhere but if you get them in a group around the bulls eye you’re more likely to get a bulls eye or get close to it at least.
One more thing is I am so happy that I got to be in the group I was in, the teachers were great, the shooting was fun, and the students that were with me were great friends and fun to be around. I liked doing the presentations to. I wish I could get the same teachers, the same students, and the same shooting fun next time. I could just go on and on about how fun it really truly was to me and how fun it was to have to write this but I have to stop so I’ll say it in the best way possible.
This was the best rifle class I’ve ever taken. And the first one
         THE END!
