When I was a little girl I remember my siblings and I all lined up along our old blue couch listening to general conference. Back then it was very challenging to pay attention to the speakers for each session. It was so easy to get distracted, especially since many have such calm and soothing voices. I am sure that I gleaned a little from all the years of sitting on that blue couch and listening to the leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
I don't think that I really started to listen, or pay attention to what was being said at General Conference until I was at least a teenager. I remember President Hinckley being sustained as Prophet of the Church. I remember his sense of humor and his powerful talking ability. He was always happy!
One of the characteristics I loved most about President Hinckley was his relationship he had with his wife! She was not a wife that lived in the shadows. She was very much out and about, like her husband. She too was a very happy lady! I love this picture I found of the two of them!
The Lord loves us. He has not left us to navigate this life without any assistance. Like years of old, there is a true and living Prophet on the earth today. Although President Hinckley passed away in 2008, there is still a Prophet on the earth today, President Thomas S. Monson.
I am grateful for the guidance, direction, and peace I have in my life because of having a Prophet to guide and direct me. I know that the Lord speaks through the Prophet what we need to know to be happy and successful in this life. Through the example of President Hinckley and President Monson I have learned that finding joy in our life is a choice. Sure there will be temptation, trials, and bumps in the road, but we have a choice in how we deal with all of that. They have chosen to be happy! Being happy won't take away the bad days, but it will make them better. I have learned that we have a loving Father in Heaven who is there for us and wants us to seek him for the strength we need each day.
We have a Father in Heaven and his Son Jesus Christ who are fully aware of each of us. We are his children. They want each of us to return to live with them someday. They have given us scriptures and Prophets and Apostles to help guide us and direct us to be able to achieve that. I am grateful for my testimony and the gift of having such wonderful men who are such examples of optimism and joy, even in these extremely turbulent times!
